Ashley Wilkinson Week Four: it's in the small things

This week after the presentation with our tutors, I made some appropriate changes to my tent and the beginnings of my character. I optimized some of the poly-heavy objects in my tent, and also took the time to make the outer 'shell' of my tent a little more elaborate and thought-out, giving it a bit more interest and believable structure.

As for the character, I had to change her proportions to something a little less stylised. This took me much longer than expected, as children's anatomy is hard to crack (Their oversized heads make it difficult to put things in proportion visually...the body looked very odd, a bit like an alien..)

.

From my previous sketches shown earlier in the blog, I compiled my favorite elements and ideas together to create the final concept for the female child player. I chose soft, springtime colors to match the season of the level, yet pale enough so she stands out against the dark sky and floor. The little party hat is a nod to the circus.

And now, I am set with the task of sculpting her: to make it easier for myself, I always begin by building a blockout in Max on a lower subdivision on the sculpt, and then import them into ZBrush as separate subtools for sculpting into. I find it a less damaging/complicated workflow than trying to build from scratch in ZBrush.

Lastly, I finished off a small sailboat meant to add interest to our lake in-level, taking inspiration from childlike toy sailboats Victorian children used to craft and play with. I also modeled a picnic basket, picnic and various other small miscellaneous props.
